Topical Authority

What topical authority is, why it decides both rankings and AI citations, and how OnPagePilot builds it from the pages that already rank.

What topical authority is

Topical authority is the degree to which a search engine or an AI answer engine treats your site as a reliable source on a subject, not just on a keyword. It is earned by covering a subject completely and coherently: a central page that answers the main question, supported by pages that answer the questions around it, all linked so the relationships are obvious to a crawler and to a reader.

A site with topical authority ranks for terms it never targeted directly, because the engine has learned that this site understands the subject. A site without it can rank one page for one term and lose that position the moment a more complete competitor appears.

Why it matters more now

Google has moved from matching keywords to judging whether a page, and the site behind it, demonstrates expertise on a topic. AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity go further: they cite the sources that cover a subject well and ignore the ones that do not, no matter how many keywords those pages repeat.

That changes what "content strategy" means. One good article is not a strategy. A subject covered end to end, in the vocabulary the ranking pages already use, is.

Start from the pages that already rank

OnPagePilot does not start from a keyword list. You pick a keyword, and OnPagePilot fetches the competitor pages that rank for it in a real headless browser, so script-heavy and single-page-app sites are read, not skipped. Those pages are the evidence of what the engine already rewards for that query.

Each page is then analysed semantically: its primary topic, the domain field it belongs to, the audience it is written for, and the terms it uses to cover the subject. The result is the actual vocabulary of the pages that rank, not a generic checklist.

Two ways to work

Run a single-keyword analysis when you need one piece of content. You get the competitor set, the topics and terms they cover, and a brief that tells you what a page on this keyword has to contain to stand next to them.

Run a Topical Authority Map when you want to own a subject. OnPagePilot builds the pillar page and the supporting cluster from what your competitors collectively cover, and shows the keyword, competitors, topics, domain fields and audiences as a network graph, so you can see the shape of the subject before you write a word.

From map to brief to page

Nothing is exported and re-imported. The pillar and cluster context becomes the brief in the SEO Editor, so the terms you are asked to cover are the terms the ranking pages cover. As you write, the editor scores term coverage against that brief in real time.

If you use AI Writing, the same brief drives the outline and each generated section, in a voice you define, with every section regenerable on its own. The map is the plan; the editor and the writer are how the plan becomes pages.

A practical workflow

1. Pick the subject, not just the keyword. Choose the head term that describes the subject you want to be known for. Run a Topical Authority Map on it.

2. Read the graph. The pillar is the page that answers the head term. The clusters are the questions your competitors answer around it. Anything they all cover and you do not is your first gap.

3. Write the pillar first, then the clusters. Each cluster page links up to the pillar; the pillar links down to every cluster. Descriptive anchor text on both directions, never "read more".

4. Re-run the map after publishing. The competitor set moves. New clusters appear. Topical authority is maintained, not achieved once.

How you know it is working

Topical Authority sits beside the rest of OnPagePilot, so you are not measuring in the dark. LLM Visibility shows whether your brand is cited inside AI answers next to your competitors for the subject. The Technical Audit confirms the pages you built are crawlable and clean, so the authority you earn is not lost to a technical fault.

Watch three signals over time: rankings on terms you never targeted directly, citations in AI answers for the subject, and the share of the cluster you have covered versus what the map shows. When all three move, the subject is yours.

Where to go next

The Topical Authority feature page shows the competitor selection, the map and the semantic analysis with product captures. The Topical Authority FAQ answers the questions we get most often about how the analysis works.

If you are in the BETA and a map does not look right for your subject, tell us on the contact page. Every map we look at together makes the next one better.

  • Authority on a subject, not a rank on a keyword
  • Built from the pages that already rank, fetched headless
  • Semantic topic, domain field, audience and term extraction per page
  • Single-keyword analysis or a full pillar-and-cluster map
  • Map becomes the brief in the SEO Editor and AI Writing, no export
  • Measured with LLM Visibility and kept clean by the Technical Audit
